The city of Chester, founded 2,000 years ago on the banks of the River Dee, is the historic gem of the North West and the most complete walled city in Britain. The original walls were built by the Romans and offer a two mile walkway around the city, interrupted by historic towers and ancient gates in the form of imposing stone arches.
Chester Cathedral is in Abbey Square and towers above the town.
Originally a 10th Century church it is the site of a wealthy Norman
Benedictine monastery and only became a cathedral after the dissolution
of the monasteries by Henry VIII. It houses some magnificent wood
carvings detailing Arthurian legend, Aesop’s fables and fabulous
mythical beasts.

Just a short note to thank you for a great day out on "The Norfolkman" from London Liverpool Street to Norwich and back on 9th September 2008. - A great day out and a great train. - I am no "Steam Buff" but it seems to me that "Oliver Cromwell" 70013 is quite an engine! Most of all a big thank you to your staff who looked after me and my 83 year-old father in carriage B (seats 7 R & F) - your kindness and attentiveness could not have been better and made the day for us. For anyone looking for a day out I thoroughly recommend you and your "Premier Dining" Service in particular.Best Regards,NS
