Chester Cathedral is in Abbey Square and towers above the town. Originally a 10th Century church it is the site of a wealthy Norman Benedictine monastery and only became a cathedral after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. It houses some magnificent wood carvings detailing Arthurian legend, Aesop’s fables and fabulous mythical beasts.
