As the latest great Top Gear race, presenter Jeremy Clarkson climbed aboard the new steam locomotive Tornado for an historic journey to Edinburgh. Racing him were fellow presenters James May, driving a vintage 1949 Jaguar XK120 and Richard Hammond who was astride a 1949 Vincent Black Shadow motorbike. As will be seen when the programme is aired, Jeremy did not keep as clean as his colleagues!

Bringing a taste of 1949 to Top Gear, the Cathedrals Express departed London Kings Cross and blasted north, hauled by the new A1 Tornado as the car and bike took the existing A1 road route. It was a thrilling race and is sure to make for a stunning TV experience and you too can travel on the very same train, albeit not on the footplate getting covered in coal dust, but perhaps in one of our dining carriages being served champagne and a fine meal.

The tour carried around 200 passengers each paying £250 for the privilege. All suppliers involved undertook the operation at cost meaning any profits raised went to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, builders and custodians of Tornado.
